Physical metaphors are portals into union with God

“He will spread his wings over you and keep you secure” (Ps. 91:4, CEV)

I confess that I used to regard physical metaphors in Scripture as ‘lightweight’ for those of us who are pursuing the depths of union with God. They didn’t seem ‘spiritual’ enough. But Oh! How wrong I was!!

Now – by contrast – I see them as powerful keys and beautiful portals into living a life of union. The metaphors give us picture-handles to help us imagine and, progressively, to activate our connectedness with our True Life which is wrapped in Christ.

There are so many examples all throughout the Bible. The ones I mention here happen to be from the Old Testament. They are glorious in their context but they’re even more glorious and effective when we see them through the lens of the completed work of Jesus Christ.

On the Cross, all separation and distance were obliterated. In truth, there is no longer a distinction between ‘physical’ and ‘non-physical’. Our bodies, for example, are not separate from the invisible, quantum field. They are part of it, and on a spectrum. Everything is spirit – but vibrating at different speeds. Our bodies and material objects around us vibrate at a lower frequency – one that we can see, hear and touch in the earth realm. But our essence – ie the very ‘fabric’ of our cells – is still pure Spirit, pure Light.

So, now let’s open our hearts wide and dive into some wonderful verses.

Look at this verse in Genesis – it is utterly wondrous! … “The Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath or spirit of life” (Gen. 2:7, AMPC).

There is so much here, but to highlight just a couple of points: Humankind is the only part of creation that God did not speak into existence with “Let there be …”.

Instead, God chose to be intimately connected with human beings from the very beginning. This is how the Voice Bible translates that same verse, Genesis 2 v 7: “The Eternal God scooped dirt out of the ground, sculpted it into the shape we call human” (Gen. 2:7, VOICE). In other words, God sculpted us from the essential elements of creation.

And then … God actually breathed His own Breath – His Spirit – into the nostrils of the man. The Hebrew word translated “breathed” conveys the sense of blowing hard. In other words, God passionately wants us to receive – and keep receiving – His Breath of Life! (See note 1 below)

So doesn’t that speak of oneness and union right from the beginning? Yes, the Fall came after that, but nowhere in Scripture does it say that God withdrew His presence or that He broke His union with mankind. It is clear that He banished Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden … but He never banished them from His holy Presence.

I suggest that it was – and is – the corrupted consciousness of human beings that fosters the lie that we are separated from God. But no more! In these times, in particular, the Lord is calling us back into full awareness that we are in Him and He is in us – and that we can never, ever be separated from that Union of Love. (See note 2 below)

This truth is way beyond our ability to grasp with our minds! That’s where metaphors are such a powerful help. If we take time to ponder them with our sanctified imagination, they can penetrate our hearts in a supernatural way, and bring the truth of Union alive to us.

Here are just a few beautiful examples – each one expressing a glorious truth that has already been fulfilled in us through Jesus:

“I have put my words in your mouth and hidden you safely in my hand” (Isa 51:16, NLT).

“I will put My law within them, and I will write it on their hearts” (Jer. 31:33, AMP).

“I the Lord your God keep hold of your right hand” (Isa. 41:13, AMP)

“He will spread his wings over you and keep you secure” (Ps. 91:4, CEV)

They’re all profound, aren’t they! I’m so thankful to God for the multitude of ways He provides for us to understand and experience His Love and His Union with every single one of us.

 (1) I try to pause and remember, as I go about my daily life, that EACH time I breathe, I’m literally breathing in the very Spirit of God. If you happen to do breathwork, then that is a perfect time for us to be consciously aware of Who you and I are breathing in.

(2) “For I am persuaded beyond doubt … that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities, nor things impending and threatening nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 8:38-39, AMPC).
